Haircuts and Tears
We surprised Cadence with her first haircut… at Disney! She cried about it.
Truth: My Happy Place was not as happy today. We surprised our 5 year old with her first haircut at The Barber Shop in Magic Kingdom. I planned for weeks and worked hard at getting her an appointment (seriously though, it shouldn’t be as hard as it is). I was excited; I couldn’t wait to see her face when we told her what we were doing! Let me tell you how that went as we stood in front of The Barber Shop, David ready with the camera to take pictures of her happy little face… ”Cadence, we are here to let you finally get your first haircut!”… tears started flowing from our daughters face, not joyful tears, no… but sad, very sad tears. I started to get very frustrated, even angry, for her not being appreciative and excited.
I pulled her aside to see what the heck was going on, I was so confused and David was ready to just pack up and go home. Something you should know about our daughter is that she is a planner (she possibly got that from me) and anything that disrupts her plans can make her crumble. Apparently that morning she was mentally prepared for rides at Disney and rides only; the haircut threw her off. Seriously, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. After I calmed down, I had a civilized conversation with her and tried to make sense of this madness. In the end she hopped up on the chair and happily got her first haircut, complete with glitter and Mickey ears, and was all smiles after that. Parenting can be hard and doesn’t always make sense but we learn as we go and I wouldn’t have it any other way (unless there could be no whining and crying then I would be ok with that).
The rest of our day was wonderful. No tears just lots of laughing and having a great time. We rode the train around the park and it was the most relaxing thing we have done at Disney. Cadence and David rode Barnstormer and had a blast! We all rode It’s a Small World, which is Jemma’s favorite.
Even though the day had some hiccups, it was still a happy day. I love spending time with my family – they are my forever happiness!
